How are they fitted?

Unlike regular endosteal implants, the process involved in the fitting of subperiosteal dental implants in Melbourne requires fewer drills but can be a bit trickier.

Our team will make incisions along your gum line and will gently lift the gum away from the jaw (you will be numbed at this point, so don’t worry!).

Then, we will place the subperiosteal fitting onto your jaw, while providing a bit of cushioning to ensure that the frame fits comfortably.

Once we are happy with the fit, we will place your gum on top of the implants and sew the incisions together; there will be some holes made into your gums to make room for the protruding posts which the prosthetic teeth will be attached to at a later date.

Do they require fusing time?

No, they don’t.

Regular implants require 3-6 months to fuse to the jaw bone, but as subperiosteal implants are placed on top of the jaw, no fusing time is needed. Of course, you will need to give your gum line a chance to heal; this can take between 2-6 weeks following the fitting.

What are the frames made from?

The frame which makes up a subperiosteal implant is made from titanium.

In a similar vein as the regular prosthetics that are attached to regular implants, the teeth which we will attach (once we are happy with the healing process) are made from a mixture of metal, composite and porcelain.

Do they last as long as regular implants?

Provided that you maintain good oral health, subperiosteal implants can last for the rest of your life without issue.

Remember, just because they aren’t fused to your jaw doesn’t mean you can slack on dental hygiene; you will still need to keep an eye out for gum disease. You will also need to see our team biannually for a check-up and should brush your prosthetic teeth to keep your gums free from bacteria and plaque.
