Can my body reject them?

It is exceedingly unlikely. All oral implants are made from titanium; a metal that has been used for decades in surgery. And, while you may have heard that oral implants can cause allergic reactions, this only occurs in less than 0.01% of the population.

I’m worried an implant is loose- what should I do?

Firstly, don’t try to pull it out or put any pressure on it! If you can feel that an implant is moving, or you have noticed that there is more of it showing above the gum line, contact our team immediately. Your implant may have become loose due to excess pressure being placed on it, or perhaps there has been swelling which has now receded, causing the appearance of a longer implant. Either way, don’t panic and contact our team for a check-up.

How do I know if an implant is infected?

When you have an infected tooth, it is easier to spot due to the presence of a nerve and pulp becoming inflamed; with implants, it can be a bit trickier.

However, some of the symptoms are the same; swelling, an unpleasant taste/odour, redness and discolouration are all signs to look for in a suspected infected implant.

It’s been recommended that I have subperiosteal implants; what are they?

Subperiosteal implants differ from regular (endosteal) implants because they are not attached to the jaw. Rather, they are placed on top of the jaw, under the gums, with posts acting as the ‘implants’ to attach the prosthetic teeth to.

If we feel that you are suitable for subperiosteal implants, this will be because you either have insufficient jaw density to support regular implants or you have a degenerative disorder that will impact on your jaw at a later date.

Will implants last the rest of my life?

It is hard to say but hopefully, they will! Provided that you attend regular check-ups, refrain from smoking or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, your implants could indeed last the rest of your life.
