Signs your dental implant is failing and how we can help
Are you fed up with a gap in your smile and want to try a restorative that is more permanent than dentures or bridges? Dental or oral implants may be just what you are looking for!
When you come to High Dental Implants to have a dental implant Melbourne fitted, we always aim to ensure that the implant is a success and that you can have your smile restored beautifully while also improving your mouth’s functionality.
But what are the signs that your dental implant Melbourne is failing and how can our team help? Read on to find out.
Discomfort
After you have had a dental implant Melbourne fitted, it is perfectly normal for the implant site to be uncomfortable for a while, as it is with any surgery.
But if you notice prolonged discomfort that seems to stem from inside the jaw and is radiating outwards, you will need to contact our team promptly for an appointment. This can point towards an abscess which, if left, can be devastating for an oral implant fusing.
Bone loss
As you may know, when you come to our team to have an oral implant fitted, one of the first things we will do is check that you have enough jawbone. If you do not have enough jawbone for an implant, we may recommend a bone graft or will suggest a different kind of restorative for you, such as dentures or a bridge.
But when an implant is fitted, it should act as a way of building up the jawbone as it fuses; if there is visible bone loss around the implant site, then this may mean that it is not fusing (for whatever reason) and our team will need to investigate.
Bleeding and infection
As is the way with any kind of surgery, once you are at home, it is normal for the site to bleed.
But continual bleeding will require our team to assess the implant site, determine the cause and see if it will affect the implant fusing.
In the same way as bleeding can be symptomatic of a problem. If you notice that the area that the implant was fitted to feels hot, hurts, has become discoloured, is bleeding or there is pus, then you need to see our team for an emergency appointment as you may have an infection.
Wobbling
An oral implant shouldn’t wobble!
Even after they have been put in and have not begun to fuse, they should be stationary. But wobbling can occur due to excess pressure being placed on them or simply due to a poorly fitting implant, so if you can see your implant wobbling in the mirror or feel it, then call our team at the practice.
Preventing implant loss
It is exceedingly unlikely that any of the aforementioned symptoms will occur, but with problems like infection, you can prevent the likelihood by not smoking after an implant fitting, not drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and by keeping the site clean by rinsing it with salt water.
If you would like to know more about having oral implants fitted, or have concerns about ones you already have, then please call our team today!
