Have some questions about your dental implant Melbourne and its aftercare? Here, we answer common FAQS about these topics, so enjoy!
How should I clean the implant site?
Once your dental implant Melbourne is in place, you will want to refrain from brushing it for a while. Brushing can cause the implant to move and may worsen any inflammation that you have.
So, we advise that you clean the site using salt water for up to 4 times a day. When the inflammation recedes, you may be able to start brushing away any food debris with a soft-bristled toothbrush, but be careful! Our team can show you the correct technique to use when it comes to brushing the visible part of an implant as it fuses, so if you are puzzled just ask us!
When can I eat solid food?
We recommend avoiding any solid food following an implant fitting for around 2 weeks, but this may vary depending on underlying health conditions.
We recommend that all of our oral implant patients eat soft, healthy food for at least 2 weeks, such as boiled fruits and vegetables. You could even experiment with different types of soup!
Of course, if you are unsure about when to reintroduce solid food to your diet, talk to our team for advice.
How much inflammation is normal?
This is tricky to answer but as a general rule, inflammation should peak around 48 hours after the implant has been fitted.
If you notice inflammation past this point which is painful, red or blue in colour or is oozing pus, then you need to see our team for an emergency appointment.
How do I spot signs of infection?
As mentioned before, 3 key signs of infection at an implant site are red or blue inflammation, pus and discomfort.
However, if you feel ill following an implant fitting, feel nauseated or are being physically sick and have a fever, please seek urgent medical attention. Infections following an implant fitting are rare, but should still be treated as a medical emergency.
How long does the healing process take?
The healing from the implant fitting will take between 2-6 weeks, depending on your age and general health. If you have an underlying condition like diabetes, it may take longer.
So, aim to clean the site twice a day, eat healthy food, stay hydrated and that implant should be feeling better in no time!
