Dental implants; common myths debunked
Have you heard oral implants hurt when they are fitted?
At High Dental Implants, our team has heard about all of the myths that surround oral implants and can explain to you the realities and benefits of this procedure.
Here, our team debunks common myths that surround the fitting of dental implants Melbourne.
Myth 1- The fitting is uncomfortable
There is an idea among many dental patients that having dental implants Melbourne fitted will be uncomfortable.
However, this is not the case. Our team will ensure that when you have dental implants Melbourne fitted, that your jaw and gums will be numbed, meaning that you won’t feel a thing during the fitting. Once you are at home, however, you may feel something akin to pressure or soreness under your gums which is normal. To mitigate this sensation, we may recommend that you take over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol. We do not recommend taking medication such as ibuprofen or aspirin, as this can thin the blood and cause bruising to worsen.
If you have concerns that you are experiencing excessive amounts of discomfort due to your oral implant fitting, please call our team as soon as possible for a check-up.
Myth 2- The fitting takes a long time
This is not technically a myth, but if you are having a single implant fitted, we will aim to have it completed in one session. Generally, the fitting of a single oral implant can take up to 2 hours, depending on its location in the mouth.
If you are having more than one implant fitted, this can take longer and we will try to spread it out as much as possible to prevent soreness to the gums.
Myth 3- The fitting is risky
The history of oral implants is not a new one and over the years, a lot of research has been done in this area.
The technology surrounding oral implants has changed since the first one was fitted in 1965, and in short, having them fitted is not risky or dangerous. Our team is up to date on all the latest techniques and equipment that can make the fitting of oral implants simple.
But, if after you have had oral implants fitted you notice a fever, flu-like sensations, discomfort, swelling or discolouration of the gum, then please contact our team for a check-up as you may have an infection.
Myth 4- Implants will become infected
Actually, the risk of oral implants becoming infected is tiny and our team will always ensure that your implants are fitted under the most sterile and hygienic of conditions.
However, as mentioned above, if you notice that you feel unwell after having oral implants fitted, or if you are in discomfort, then please contact us for an emergency check-up.
Myth 5- You can be too old for implants
If you have good oral health and have good general health, then there is no upper age limit on oral implants!
But the fusing period can take slightly longer depending on your age and if you have any underlying health conditions, such as osteoporosis. If this is the case, our team will be able to offer a more accurate prediction of how long it may take.
There is a lower age limit for oral implants, and you will have to be over the age of 18 years to undertake this procedure.
