An introductory guide to fitting your dental implant Melbourne

As an adult, your smile is important. Not only for looking your best in photos but also for networking and introducing yourself at meetings. In fact, your smile is one of the first things that strangers may notice.dental-implants-melbourne

So, should you have a few missing teeth due to decay, illness or injury, it can feel quite daunting to smile in group photos or even in selfies. And of course, should you have missing teeth, you are likely to have more difficulties eating food and using a correct chewing technique, leading to secondary health issues and an increased risk of dental health problems too. Luckily, thanks to the increase in the availability of oral implants, all of these issues and more can be bypassed.

At High Dental Implants, as our name suggests, our expertise is in the fitting of dental implants. We have helped numerous patients refresh their smiles with these fittings, leading to a lifetime of better smiles and better health.

What is an oral implant?

A dental implant Melbourne looks like a small screw and is made from titanium. It is placed into your jaw with a small section protruding above the gum line and, once there, it fuses with the surrounding bone over a period of 3-6 months; this may vary based on your age and health. After the implant has fused, our team will then attach the prosthetic tooth or teeth to it and voila! It is ready to use for eating.

The fitting

Before the fitting, we will take x-rays of your jaws to ensure that you have enough jawbone to support the dental implant Melbourne. If all is well, then your gums will be numbed and our team will make some incisions where they will insert the implant, gently peeling the gum back. If you have a socket, we will use that to place the implant whereas, if you don’t due to historic tooth loss, then we will drill a fresh one. Once the implant is fitted, we will then sew your gums back together and complete the fitting.

Recovery time

Recovering from an oral implant fitting can take a few weeks; the gums may be sore and you will need to refrain from putting too much pressure onto the implant site while it heals. Try to stay hydrated and eat lots of fruits and vegetables to promote faster healing! We recommend managing discomfort by taking paracetamol; refrain from the use of ibuprofen or aspirin, as these can thin the blood and prolong any bruising.

Infection prevention and warning signs

It is unlikely that you will get an infection following an implant fitting but, to prevent one from occurring, clean the site daily with saltwater and keep an eye out for signs of infection, including discolouration, unusual and painful swelling, feeling unwell and fever.

Longevity and lifestyle

Your implant should last up to and over 15 years but, to ensure this longevity, refrain from smoking and drinking excessively and be sure to brush twice daily as you would your natural teeth. Oh, and pop in for biannual check-ups with our team at High Dental Implants!
