But before you rush to book an appointment, what exactly is involved in the immediate aftercare of dental implants Melbourne?

No brushing!

Yes, you read that right! Our dental surgery is telling you not to brush your teeth!

But hold on. If you have natural teeth in your mouth, they will need to be brushed, and you should avoid brushing the area around your newly fitted dental implants Melbourne. This is to allow the gums to heal and to prevent the introduction of any debris to the incisions.

Soft foods only

Surgery on the gums is going to cause soreness. So, for the sake of staying comfortable and not aggravating your implants, we have to insist that for the first few weeks following a fitting, you only eat soft, healthy foods. Drink more water, and eat boiled vegetables and fruits, like boiled mash, boiled swede and soft foods like cooked pasta.

Take pain relief

One thing that many people expect following the fitting of oral implants is discomfort.

And while we can almost guarantee that the process won’t be as bad as you think, we do advise our patients to keep an eye out for the level of discomfort that they are in as the gums heal after the surgery. If it is worsening, come and see our team. If it is getting better with pain relief, then you are likely fine. So, keep pain relief like paracetamol close to hand, and avoid blood thinning agents like ibuprofen or aspirin.

Keep in touch

In the weeks and months following the implant(s) being fitted, you will need to stay in regular contact with our team.

This is for 2 reasons; the first is so we can assess whether or not your oral health is in good condition as the implants fuse. And the second reason is so we can take X-rays to look at the rate at which your implants are fusing. This may vary based on your age and general health, but if after 12 months there are no signs of the implants fusing, then we will have to remove them and try another restorative option.

Report abnormalities at any stage

It may seem odd, but our dental team doesn’t know everything solely from looking in your mouth!

And so, a cursory glance at your implants may not showcase any issues that you have had with them in your daily life. If they are wobbling, tell us! If they hurt when you eat salt, tell us. And, of course, if you are worried that they are infected due to a sensation that won’t go away, please report it. This will help us to save the implants from any issues we may not be able to see.

This rule applies for the entire lifespan of the implant, so stay in touch!
