A guide to dental implants: from fitting to aftercare
When you want to alleviate a gap in your teeth or even regain bite strength that has been lost following multiple extractions, it may be time to look into having oral implants fitted.
These epic restoratives are now available at the majority of dental surgeries. But we will let you in on a secret; implantation is our team’s speciality!
At High Dental, we have fitted thousands of dental implants Melbourne, and have all of the required expertise to ensure that your implant fitting goes off without a hitch. Great!
So, exactly what is involved in having dental implants Melbourne fitted?
The consultation
An oral implant assessment is a consultation with our team to determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants Melbourne. The assessment typically includes a thorough examination of your mouth, including your teeth, gums, and jawbone, as well as any medical conditions or medications that you may be taking. We will also take X-rays and possibly a CT scan to get a detailed view of your jawbone and any existing teeth. We will then discuss the results of the assessment with you and explain the risks, benefits, and potential outcomes of the implant procedure.
If you aren’t suitable for implants, we will be happy to recommend a different option, so you will get the smile you want one way or another!
The fitting
The big day! We promise it’s not as bad as you think!
During the procedure, you will first be given anaesthesia or sedation to ensure that it is comfortable and pain-free. We will then make an incision in the gums to expose your jawbone. A small hole will be drilled into the jawbone, and the implant will be inserted into the hole. The implant will be left to heal and fuse with the jawbone, which typically takes several months.
Aftercare
When you are at home after the fitting, you will likely notice some discomfort. This is normal and can be mitigated with over-the-counter pain relief like paracetamol.
You will need to keep the implant site clean, but rather than brush for the first few days, try to rinse the site with salt water. This will keep the swelling down, as well as keep the site clear of debris.
Prosthetics!
Next up are the prosthetics!
These can usually be fitted around 3 to 6 months after your oral implant surgery takes place, depending on how well the implant has fused.
Our team will ensure that if you are having a single tooth replaced, the prosthetic tooth is identical to the surrounding teeth in every way. But, if you want to have an entire denture fitted with implants, it can be as bright as you want it to be. Look out, Hollywood!
Aftercare (part 2!)
Oral implants have very simple aftercare.
All you need to do is brush them twice a day, as you would your normal teeth, floss, and attend biannual check-ups with our team.
If you notice anything unusual about your implants, whether it is how secure they feel or if there is any discomfort or bleeding, please call us.
