Curious about the aftercare following a dental implant? A guide from our team at High Dental Implants
When you have an oral implant fitted, you may be surprised at how straightforward the entire process seems to be.
Our team takes some X-rays, books you in for the fitting, your mouth is numbed and sometime later, you have an implant. Even root canals can be trickier! This is because with oral implants, the planning for the fitting is done in advance and so, our team knows exactly where to make any incisions and has all of the tools ready.
When it comes to aftercare, we have found that many patients can become a bit unstuck and unsure of what to do.
At High Dental, when we fit your dental implant Melbourne, that is not the end of our care for you. We will answer any questions you have about the procedure, provide you with a detailed aftercare guide and will of course be on hand to offer you any urgent appointments as and when you may need them. We always aim to cover all bases with our patients!
What can you expect following the fitting of your dental implant Melbourne concerning aftercare? Here, we offer a brief guide to help you through.
Bleeding and swelling
As is the way with any surgery, following the procedure there will be some bleeding and swelling.
When it comes to placing a dental implant Melbourne, our team has found that the further back in the mouth the implant is placed, the higher the chance of you having a bit of a swollen face. But should you be bleeding excessively and if the swelling is preventing you from eating, breathing or is starting to become unbearably sore, call us immediately.
Soreness
Like bleeding and swelling, soreness and surgery go hand in hand.
The gums around your implant site will be tender for at least a week following the fitting and as is the way after surgery, a sign of healing is that it reduces and doesn’t worsen. To avoid aggravating the site, do not brush the area around the implant, avoid spicy foods and alcohol and try to avoid putting any pressure on the implant.
Eating and drinking
Following surgery, it is important to stay hydrated and to avoid eating until the numbing agent has worn off.
For the first few days, you should aim to only consume soft, healthy foods like boiled vegetables and fruits, to avoid putting pressure on the implant.
Hygiene
As we mentioned earlier, you need to avoid brushing the area as this can worsen inflammation.
To keep the site free from debris and bacteria, we recommend gargling salt water up to 4 times a day. Do not use mouthwashes until our team gives you the all clear to do so, as these can cause more inflammation and worsen discomfort.
Warning signs
It is important to look out for indicators of infection.
Look out for redness, soreness, unusual swelling, bleeding, discolouration, nausea, fever and a general feeling of being unwell. If you notice any of these signs, contact us.
