Here, we list some of the most common myths that surround having a dental implant Melbourne fitted.

Implants are risky

As the technology that surrounds having a dental implant Melbourne has advanced, the risk rate associated with this procedure has reduced.

As they can now be fitted at our dental surgery as opposed to in a surgical theatre, the risks associated with general anaesthesia have been removed. And as the risks linked to infection have also dropped with improved surgical techniques, there is a lower chance of this secondary complication.

Implants always fail

Oral implants rarely fail and if they do, it usually occurs in the first 12 months following the fitting.

Failure of implants can be caused by lifestyle choices, such as smoking, drinking and applying too much pressure to implants that are fusing. However, if you have an underlying health condition such as diabetes or cancer, you are at a higher risk of implant failure.

I’m too old for oral implants

Many people are surprised to learn that there is no upper age limit concerning oral implants.

You must be over the age of 18 however, due to jawbone growth.

To be a suitable candidate for oral implants, you must be in good general health and good overall oral health; those are the only 2 key requirements!

You need a lot of jawbone for implants to be successful

This is a partial myth; if you are having an endosteal implant fitted, then yes you will need to have a lot of jawbone that is healthy for the implant to be a success.

However, if you don’t fall into this category, you can still have a different type of implant fitted. Other options include subperiosteal, zygomatic and mini implants.

Implants do not last long

With correct care and no health complications, oral implants can last up to and over 20 years.

Just be sure to keep them clean with twice-daily brushing once the prosthetic teeth are in place, keep an eye out for gum disease and be sure to attend your biannual check-ups with our team.

When you have just had your implants fitted, we recommend keeping the site clean using saltwater to avoid putting stress on the newly fitted implant.
