Worried about your dental implant healing? Some top tips from High Dental
So, you’ve attended our surgery for an initial consultation about oral implants and have been given the go-ahead.
And while ou may know all there is to know about the implant fitting process, you may be a bit confused or unsure about the healing process that follows.
At High Dental, we know a lot about the healing process following a dental implant in Melbourne and can suggest a more personalised approach to the fusing process should you have existing medical conditions or be taking any medications. Should you have any issues when your implants are fusing, we are only a phone call away and will aim to see you promptly.
So, what are some of the tips we recommend to speed up the healing following a dental implant in Melbourne?
Adjust your diet
Following the fitting of a dental implant in Melbourne, you will need to adjust your diet.
No hard foods and nothing too sticky! We recommend to all of our patients to eat healthy, softer foods such as boiled or steamed vegetables and soups during those first few weeks following an implant being fitted. When our team gives you the green light to resume your normal diet, do so with care to not disturb the implant.
Take pain relief
As obvious as it seems, a simple way to help your implant to fuse quicker (or to draw your attention away from the post-surgery discomfort) is to regularly take pain relief.
Which type you take will depend on other factors (such as your consumption of other medications and health conditions) but certain pain relief can reduce swelling and thus speed up the healing of your gums.
Smoking and drinking
We’ve said it before and we will say it again, following the fitting of oral implants, you need to refrain from smoking and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
Both of these activities can cause the gums to swell, the gum line to recede and also slow the healing process. Not to mention the effect of the cigarette smoke on an open wound!
If you need help with smoking cessation, talk to our team at High Dental for more advice.
Sleep elevated
As odd as it sounds, in the first few weeks following the implant surgery, a key way you can help your implants to fuse is by sleeping in a slightly elevated position.
This will prevent excessive swelling, prevent bleeding and will thus speed up the healing process. It will also prevent blood clots from forming, which can hinder the fusing process too.
Attend dental appointments
Once your implants are fitted, you may feel that you won’t need to attend dental check-ups until a minimum of 3 months later to check on the fusing process.
But in the weeks following implantation, you will need to see our team regularly, so we can check for issues like infection, rejection and simply ensure that the implants are fusing straight. So, to ensure your oral implants fuse correctly you will need to attend check-ups.
