Just had dental implants fitted? Information on how to spot a problem
So you’ve left our surgery after having oral implants fitted and are feeling pretty good about the entire process Great stuff!
Not only have you now got a new set of teeth coming in a few months time, but you have a road to recovery to navigate which can be a bit daunting. As oral implants are essentially titanium screws which are attached to your jaw, it can be a bit difficult to know what to expect during the healing, even with advice from our team.
Luckily, the majority of patients experience no issues after having oral implants fitted but as with all areas of life, it is better to be safe than sorry. Our team can advise you on the healing process of your dental implants in Melbourne, and ensure that both you and your mouth stay healthy during those all-important 3 to 6 months of fusing.
But what are some of the signs that there may be an issue with your dental implants in Melbourne?
Swelling
Some swelling following the fitting of dental implants in Melbourne is to be expected.
However, if the swelling becomes larger, painful or begins to ooze, you will need to come back and see our team as this could indicate an infection or an underlying issue with the implant fitting.
Redness
Like the swelling, the gum around the implant site is likely to be red and sore for a few days following the implant being placed.
However, if the red area on the gum appears to be spreading and is becoming more painful to touch, our team will need to investigate. Once again, this may indicate an infection but could also point to an accumulation of bacteria, causing the gum to become spongy and sore. And as you know, gum disease and implants do not work well together, so it is best to have such developments seen promptly.
Foul taste or odour
A sure-fire sign of an infection is a foul taste in your mouth or a bad odour on your breath that you cannot get rid of.
Even if there are no other signs that there is an abscess forming, our team will need to assess the implant site, as there may be an accumulation of plaque which is causing the offensive odour.
If you do notice a foul odour following an implant, do not attempt to clean the site with mouthwash as this will cause immense discomfort and can irritate the already sensitive gum.
Fever
Having a fever is an obvious indicator that there is a problem and you will need emergency medical attention if one develops.
Symptoms that may accompany a fever include vomiting, nausea, cold sweats, chills and aches throughout the body.
Discomfort
Discomfort following an implant fitting is normal but if it worsens and cannot be managed with over the counter pain relief, you need to see our team immediately.
If the level of discomfort is distracting you from work or impacting your sleep, contact our team.
