What to expect when getting dental implants Melbourne fitted
The majority of adult patients who want to restore their teeth to their former glory after missing a few will likely have heard of oral implants.
Attached to the jaw through surgery, oral implants have changed the field of restorative dental care and now, more people than ever before are having oral implants fitted and having bridges and even entire sets of dentures attached to the implants.
When you come to see our team at High Dental, we will always be happy to discuss the process behind having dental implants Melbourne fitted, as we are experts in this field and have been working with this procedure and this technology for nearly a decade. We can talk you through the procedure and the aftercare and will help you if there are any potential complications.
With that said, few people know anybody who has had dental implants Melbourne fitted. So what exactly can you expect from the procedure? Read on to find out.
X-rays
Dental implants Melbourne are affixed to the jaw through surgery, so our team will need to take a lot of X-rays of your jaw during the initial consultation and during the following appointments after the implants have been fitted. At the initial consultation, we need to assess the health, thickness and stability of your jaw. Once the implants have been fitted, we will need to assess whether osseointegration is occurring as required or if there are any potential issues
that are slowing the process down.
A bit of soreness!
As is the way with any kind of surgery, you can expect there to be a bit of soreness after you have had oral implants fitted. However, this should be manageable with over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol. If you suspect that you have a dental infection forming after you have had your implants fitted, you should seek to contact our team as soon as possible. Signs of an infection include discolouration, the presence of pus, fever and discomfort in the area that is unrelenting.
Check-ups
As mentioned before, we will need to see you after you have had your implants fitted. Initially, you will probably see our team within a week of the implants being attached to your jaw, and this may then be spread out to around once a month until the implants have fused. This will be to mitigate any potential issues that may be occurring and ensure that everything is going as planned.
Change in diet
In the first few weeks following having the implants fitted, you will need to change your diet. Newly fitted implants do not sit well with hard foods, and as the gums will be sore following the surgery, you will want to avoid spicy and salty foods. Aim to up your water intake and eat healthier foods in this interim until our team gives you the green light to go back to your regular diet.
Waiting!
Once you have had your oral implants fitted, there will be a waiting period of between 3 to 9 months. Therefore, there will be an extensive time where you will have just the oral implants in your mouth without the prosthetic teeth. But our team can create semi-permanent prosthetics for you in this interim once the swelling and the soreness from the initial surgery have reduced.
