At High Dental Implants Melbourne, we have fitted many a dental implant Melbourne and can answer any questions you may have relating to the assessment, fitting or maintenance of an implant.

Here, our team answers some of the most common queries that we receive when a patient is about to undertake the fitting of a dental implant Melbourne. So, enjoy.

Can anyone have oral implants fitted?

Unfortunately, no, not everyone can have a dental implant Melbourne fitted.

You need to be over the age of 18, have good oral health and have a healthy amount of jaw bone to have an implant fitted. If you have an underlying health condition, such as osteoporosis, this can further complicate things, and you will need to discuss this with our team and your doctor before undertaking this treatment.

How long does the fitting take?

The fitting of an oral implant can take up to 2 hours per implant, so if you are having multiple implants fitted, we may choose to spread this out over several appointments.

But as your case may differ from the average, please talk to our team for a more accurate estimate of how long the procedure will take.

Is it uncomfortable?

The fitting of oral implants has been deemed to be uncomfortable, ironically by many people who have not undertaken it.

But don’t worry! Our team uses a general anaesthetic before we begin the procedure, so you will not feel a thing. When you are at home afterwards, you may feel something similar to bruising underneath the area where the implant was fitted. This is normal, but if it becomes worse over time, you may have an infection and you should seek help from our team. When mitigating the discomfort at home, we advise the use of over-the-counter medication such as paracetamol. Try to steer clear of medications like ibuprofen and aspirin as these can thin the blood and worsen any inevitable bruising that will accompany the surgery.

Will I need stitches?

Once you have had your oral implant fitted, you will need to have stitches to close the gum around the implant.

This will promote healing, keep the implant site free from bacteria and debris and also act as support for the newly fitted implant. The stitches that we use will often need to be removed, and this will occur at one of your follow-up appointments.

As is the way with stitches, try to keep them clean and not apply pressure to them as this may cause them to come undone.

When will the false teeth be attached?

The prosthetic teeth will be attached to the implant once we have established that the implant is secure in your jawbone. This will usually occur within 3 to 6 months of the implant being fitted, depending on your age and health. Our team will establish the stability of the implant using an x-ray, and if after 12 months the implant has not fused or is not secure, we will consider the treatment nonviable and look into other restorative procedures.
